Penny Pincher Party/ Halloween Butterfly Costumes

This year with all the sickness going around (H1N1, stomach virus, runny noses, you name it) I decided to make my dd costumes with stuff that I just had laying around the house.

I did not go to the store to purchase one item used! Well ok I give I did buy them at one time, but none were bought with this thing in mind...does that still count?

I used nylons and wire hangers to make the wings. Some paint and rhinestones that are for scrapbooking for embellishments. The mauve flower was made using a tutorial I posted earlier today.

Both tutus were made previously, the mauve one was for infant pictures this summer, and the white and pick was fixed up from a couple years ago.

The brown kufi hat I crocheted a couple weeks ago, not for the butterfly costume, but I think it works great.

And the korker bow was given to us in a bow exchange.

Finally these have turned out to be the most expensive costumes I will ever (hopefully make) the reason...

My daughter tipped the iron (that was turned off, but is so dang smart that it turns on by itself) onto the carpet and melted a nice imprint into it. Lovely I don't know how I will fix that one. Any suggestions?

Wired Ribbon Flowers

Take 2" wired ribbon. Cut a piece as long as your arms

Pull out one wire.

On the other wire place tape at one end. The tape is to make sure that you don't pull the wire all the way through.

Pull the wire from the other end until the ribbon is all bunched up. Place tape on the end that you were pulling from right next to the ribbon. This will hold the ribbon all bunched up.

Place the ribbon in a circle. Mine completed 3 circles

Pull the one of the wire through the middle hole (in the middle of the circle)

Twist the wires together and remove the tape.

Hot glue the flower onto a ribbon lined clip.

Enjoy!

Newdale Boutique-patterns, car seat tents, and Rag Quilts

This last weekend my sister and I participated in the Newdale Boutique. It was lots of fun getting ready for, but it was also a ton of work. I took a total of 15 blankets and car seat tents. Quite a few patterns and a couple of kits. I will find out today if it was worth my time. I sure hope so :)

This is a smaller 33x33 blanket. I just loved the animal print. It is so much fun

This rag quilt is also 33x33. Perfect for your little one.
A New Applique Design! This one has a dinosaur. I have wanted to try it out and I think it turned out really great. I only put the dinos on 4 of the squares but I think it worked out great!
This print was just so dang cute. I have laid it out several different times but just could not find the right combo until now! I just love those dots for a little girls car seat tent
This was also an experiment. My husband keeps telling me that I need to make a car seat tent out of the blanket pattern. So I finally did it. I am a farmers daughter and I really loved the way this turned out
After this car seat tent was all sewn I about switched mine to this one. I just love the zebra print. I would have switched it if my mom did not sew mine for me...I love you mom
This car seat tent is just so bright and cute. It now rests as my avatar on Etsy. I am now converted to using flowers on the handles. It just makes this tent.

A girl version of the John Deere Rag Quilt. I just love the way that this one turned out.
When I first found the fabric for this blanket I was hesitant to use it. I am now converted. I think that this is my favorite John Deere Rag Quilt so far

Versions of all of these will be available in my shop www.avisiontoremember.etsy.com. So go check it out!

Magnetic Paper Dolls--failed

I saw some magnetic paper dolls on another blog (Skip to My Lou)
I tried it out. And no I don't have pictures of the final product because it did not work.
I did something wrong, I cut out shoes and a dress and a doll in the magnet. Then I recut it all in paper. Then stuck them onto the sticky side of the magnet. Then when I would put the clothes on the doll part they would not stick.
So I am hoping you all might have a suggestion to help me out. I am wanting to make them for christmas for my 3 yr old, but it might not work out

Baby Food

I love having my girls. I would probably have a few more than what we have decided if it did not cost so dang much to have them, to diaper them, to feed them, to cloth them, and the list goes on and on.

One of the things that I am doing to cut down on the cost is to make baby food. My parents and my in laws both grow fairly large gardens. We help them with those gardens because we don't have our own land to grow them on, plus they grow way more than they can even think of handling on their own. It is a total win win for us all.

So both sets of parents grew banana squash. They are huge and remind me of pumpkins because of their texture and tough skin. I have never tried one, well, never had the desire to try one. But since we had an abundance of banana squash I decided make it into baby food.

Banana Squash Baby Food:

I took the banana squash peeled it and then cut it into 1-2 inch cubes
Boil the squash for 6 minutes (rolling boil)
After it has boiled then drain and dump into a sink full of cold, cold water
let the squash cool off.
Bag the squash in freezer bags in the cubes.
Whenever you need the squash remove it from the bag, let it thaw, then puree it.
Now you have delicious and healthy baby food.
This method would work for any type of squash/zuchinni. It would work even for carrots

Now doesn't that look disgusting :)

The chunks of squash after being boiled and drained. Looks perty don't it

Bow Holders

I have had this project in the back of my mind for awhile now. It just has not actually come to fruition until now.

These cute bow holders are made from 4x6 frames from Micheals. They were only $1.00
I painted the frames. Then modge podged some scrapbook paper to the front. Used an exacto knife to trim the edges. Used some stamp ink around the edges to make them look scrappy. Modge podges again. Glued the ribbon onto the back of the frame and FINISHED.

This was supper simple and I am amazed at how many bows my girls have. I think way to many but of course I will keep making more...why you ask.....because I enjoy doing it :)

Thrift Shop

I had to run into town today to mail a package. I decided that since I was next to Deseret Industries that I would run in there and see what they had for repurposing clothing for the little ones....

NOTHING.........

Well at least nothing under $3.00 and I thought that was way over priced for a thrift store....so we walked away with some cute clothing patterns that I am hoping have everything or at least the important parts to the patterns.

Next we went to the shop next door but I did not have any cash or check so I just browsed, this is a much bigger possibility. Cheaper clothing but I never have cash so we will see.

I just wish we had a bigger variety. One problem of a small town

Toddler Jammies and a Pencil Notebook Case

I have had this fleece for a couple of years. I just have been at a loss as to what to do with it. I am tired of it taking up so much room in my fabric drawers. So I decided to try to make some jammies with it for the upcoming winter.

They are extremely bulky but my dd loves them. She has worn them every second that she can. It was a fight to tear them off her body last night, they were to dirty to wear to bed :)

I just used a simple jammie pant pattern for the pants (butterick b5153) and for the sweater I laid out a sweater of hers and made it a few inches longer. It worked perfectly.

Fleece is surprisingly easy to sew, bulky but easy.

This is my next upcycle project. . . what should it be....well I might hold off until spring to make a cute skirt for baby.

Here is the finished project I told you all about last post. It is a pencil notebook/color book case. I have some kinks that need to be worked out but I think I might offer it in my shop...what do you all think?

Today I am cutting out tons of kits for rag quilt car seat tents. I have a show coming up. This will be my first one...wish me luck.

Busy Busy Busy

This is a sneak peak for a new pattern that I am contemplating (I have not decided if its for the blog or shop lmk), it also will go in conjunction with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints General Conference. It will be done today sometime, it just depends on my girlies:)

This is another car seat canopy. I will be listing this soon. It just needs clipped and washed. Wash day is tomorrow so, very very soon!

This blanket I started before we moved back home from Southern Utah. I just found my fabric stash from then and finished up this blanket. It is not perfect, that is probably why I stopped sewing it back in the day.

I had an order for a John Deere Blanket. I think it turned out great!

And this is for a friend. I finished it last week. I will be posting it in my etsy shop as a pattern, kit, and blanket. Look for it there very soon

Upcycling

I am getting the upcycle bug! I have a couple of shirts that I am going to repurpose into dresses for the girls, a dress that is to big for me that I am going to make into a skirt, and another rag quilt car seat canopy that I can't wait to get finished..........

Why you ask have you not jumped right in and done them so you all can see???

I have broken every sewing needle that I own and since I am trying to save as much money as possible I am not driving the 10 miles into town that is required to purchase sewing needles....Oh and my hubby forgot to pick some up on the way home yesterday....hopefully today.

I will keep you posted.

But don't get me wrong I am busy still I have been going through 4 boxes of apples in that last week trying to dry them into apple chips and make applesauce. I now have 19 bottles of applesauce and tons of bags of dried apples. I think I might do one more batch of applesauce and 2-3 batches of dried apples today, and make an apple pie cause my FIL requested one. The rest ( I still have one heaping box full) will go to a family down the road that has 10 kids. I am sure they could just eat them faster than I can can (ha ha) them :)

I hope you all have a great day.
