Football Rag Quilt and some Car Seat Covers

I've been busy this last week working on a couple of different custom rag quilts.  Today I finished up a football baby quilt and a orange, green, and brown queen size quilt.

I also realized that I am running REALLY low on boy car seat tents...how could that be?  Maybe its cause I am always thinking girly.  I just might blame it on having 2 girls and a female dog.  But who knows.  So last week I was able to get a couple back into the shop.

So at least I have a couple now, right?

Whos ready for SuperBowl Sunday?

Around our house SuperBowl Sunday is a HUGE deal!  We get together with a ton of family, with tons of food, and lots of fun.  The guys seem to pay attention to the football game and the women pay more attention to the commercials and chatting.

So my question is do you do Super Bowl Sunday?  If you do what is your day like?  I would love to know what your are going to be cooking?

Which team are you rooting for?  I haven't decided yet. I seem to always pick a team based on who's uniforms I like the best.  Silly I know!

Newest Pattern: Plus a Name Competition!

This is my latest quilt.  I am working on the pattern and a not so frilly boy version.  I am in love with the tangerine and hot pink combination!
I love the individual scallops!  They were so much fun and I love the Texture it adds to the quilt!
Plus a fun ruffle for those frilly girls plus some soft minky for the back
So here is the competition now :  I am so not creative with words and need a name for this quilt.  Any ideas?  If I do pick your name, you will receive this pattern for your hard work!

Building Rolling Shelves

My parents have some really cool rolling shelves made from regular old metal shelves with the wooden flat part.  So for Christmas we asked for our own set.

I knew that they wouldn't cost nearly as much as the Name Brand Plastic ones that I see at all the big box stores in town.
I would highly recommend getting the heavy duty metal shelves.  Just make sure that they have wooden flat pieces.  The shelves we got measure about 2 ft wide by 4 ft long and 6 ft tall.  They are also Muscle Man brand.  The other key thing is that it takes 1 1/2 half of those heavy duty shelves to build 1 shelf.  We used the 1 1/2 so that we could have 8 shelves instead of the 5 that come in 1 shelf set.  So if you don't need 2 shelves, then find a friend that would like their own set so that you don't end up having an extra 1/2 of a shelf hanging around.

Total cost for this project (I am guessing because it was a Christmas gift :) $100/ shelf and $10 for wood.  So around $160 for a nice rolling shelf.

Then to make the little dividers my dad cut out some 1 inch by 1 inch wood pieces.  Then we decided how far apart we wanted the wood pieces and nailed them down with the nail gun.

The key to make the shelves rolling is to install your shelves lopsided.  We placed the bolt thingys that stick out 1 higher on the one side than the other.  Also, the other key thing to do is to install your shelves UPSIDE Down so that they is a nice pocket for the cans to stay in instead of rolling off the shelf :)

The other thing we did is the top shelf and the middle shelf are regular shelves.  We did this because the metal upright pieces come in 2 pieces for each upright.  You could rig a bracket to still have shelf rolling but it definitely would be more difficult.

Now thanks to my parents we have an awesome rolling can shelf.

Fabric Book Pockets or Slings

So a few months ago when I first started on Pinterest  I found these awesome fabric book shelf pocket thingy's.

I fell in love.  I desperately needed some storage for all my girl's books.  My mom had the perfect fabric in her stash.  So I got to work sewing up a couple of them.

I used THIS tutorial.  I did make a few changes (don't I always?!?)  I didn't double the fabric since I was using Home Decor fabric which is a lot thicker and heavier.

Other than that I think I kept everything pretty much the same.  I love them.  But more importantly the Girls do too!

Guest Tutorial: Hating Martha with Creature Mittens

I want to introduce you to Hating Martha Blog. She has a fun creature mitten tutorial to share with all of you.  Make sure to stop by her blog and say hello!  Thanks again for sharing with my readers Janel!
Hi all! I am skipping about with excitement at being here at A Vision to Remember! Thanks so much to Bobbie to having me! I am Janel and I have a little ol' blog called Hating Martha. It's chock full of imperfect crafts, okay recipes, and loads of fun. I would love you all to stop by and say hi sometime...I promise to be on my best behavior! I want to show you a fun little craft I did recently for a birthday gift. It was for a friend of my 13 year old daughter. It isn't perfect, in fact I won't score any points in the sewing department. But, it scored lots of points in the cool factor and that's something isn't it?
I started with an old sweater that was on it's way to the donation box.
The cable pattern and little tab closures were perfect for this.
Any old sweater you have will work perfectly.
I used another mitten I liked to get a shape.
I just pinned around that mitten. Yep, real technical.
I used the bottom hem of the sweater as the bottom of the mitten. I strongly advise trying to do this so you don't have to mess with hemming. It just looks nicer.
Please remember you need a total of 4. I know from experience that you can forget.
It's preferable to have a pair of mittens. At least that's what I hear :).
This is what you should end up with after cutting them out (times 2)
Next up, spikes.
I used felt for this. Drew a design and cut it out.
On that bottom line I folded the felt over so it and then cut the design.
You get something like this.
You need to run across the bottom with the sewing machine or fabric glue to get the shape to hold.
And then sew it on to the top of your mittens.
Run your stitching thru the middle.
I was making a girl and a boy so I used buttons that matched that idea.
Pink for the girl, sailor for the boy.
Just sew those on to the tops of your mittens.
You should end up with something like this...
Right about here you really could call it okay and sew those up.
But, my daughter wanted me to jazz these up a bit.
So, a mustache for the boy needed to happen.
I wrapped black yarn around my two fingers several times, then sewed the bunch onto the mittens.
Once they were all sewn on nice and tight I cut the bottom loops to make it mustachey.
What you don't see and I forgot to take pictures of was...
Adding some pink felt lips to the girl. (cut out lips and sew them on before you sew up the mittens)
Adding black eyeballs with sharpies to the buttons.
Okay, now that you have your crazy additions done you can sew those up. Turn right sides together and sew up along the edges. If you have a mustache, be sure to tuck it in so it doesn't get sewn into the mittens. (I never thought I would use that sentence in my life :))
Turn them out and tada! How cute are these. In a sad, unfortunate kind of way.
I think they look more like puppets.
No matter, my daughter thinks they are sooo cool!
My daughter attacked the spikes with green puffy paint.
I should mention that I used those tab closures from the sweater on the back of the mittens to allow them to be attached together. It was a lucky, fun extra.
There you have it...a quick and simple gift that pleases even a teenager. Thanks for having me Bobbie!
And you all, don't forget to stop by sometime and say hi!
